Why We Should Read Surah Al Kahf Every Friday
Published: 1 April 2026
Reading Surah Al Kahf every Friday brings a special light, weekly forgiveness, and protection from major tests, as promised by the Prophet ﷺ.
Prophet’s Sayings
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever recites Surah Al Kahf on Friday, a light will shine for him between this Friday and the next.”
Another narration mentions a light from under his feet up to the sky on the Day of Resurrection, and forgiveness between the two Fridays.
He ﷺ also said that whoever memorises verses from the beginning (and in another narration, the end) of Surah Al Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.
Stories
Surah Al Kahf is made up of four main stories that each teach us how to handle a different kind of test in life: our faith, our money, our knowledge, and our power.
First Story: People of the Cave
A group of believing youths escaped their people’s shirk and oppression and took refuge in a cave, trusting Allah alone. Allah made them sleep for many years and turned their story into a sign for the people around them.
Key lessons:
- Stay firm on faith even when society pushes you the other way.
- Hijrah of the heart (leaving sin for Allah) brings unexpected protection.
- Allah controls time, life, and history, not tyrants.
Second Story: The Two Gardens
One man was given two lush gardens, wealth, and comfort, but he became arrogant, denied the Hereafter, and forgot to say “In shaa’ Allah” and to thank Allah. His gardens were destroyed and he realised, too late, that all power belongs only to Allah.
Key lessons:
- Wealth is a test, not a guarantee of Allah’s pleasure.
- Gratitude and humility protect blessings.
- Do not be deceived by dunya; it can disappear overnight.
Third Story: Musa and Al Khidr
Prophet Musa عليه السلام travelled to learn from Al-Khidr, who was given a special knowledge of Allah’s wisdom behind certain events. Musa could not initially bear the hidden wisdom in actions that looked harmful, like making a ship defective or meeting a boy, until the reasons were later explained.
Key lessons:
- Human knowledge is limited; Allah’s plan always has wisdom.
- Be patient with what you do not understand yet.
- True humility is seeking knowledge and accepting that Allah knows what we do not.
Fourth Story: Dhul Qarnayn
Dhul Qarnayn was a just ruler given power and means by Allah, who travelled to different peoples and ruled with justice and mercy. He helped a weak nation by building a barrier against Ya’juj and Ma’juj, while attributing all success back to Allah.
Key lessons:
- Power and authority are also a test from Allah.
- A believer uses strength to serve people and uphold justice.
- Always remember: “This is a mercy from my Lord,” not my own greatness.
